My kids had been learning about contractions and so to spice it up we performed surgery! I got this idea from thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com
The kids were excited all day long because they knew they were going to be surgeons.. but had no idea what for. I told them they were going to be contraction surgeons, and they had to work with their tables (because surgeons never perform surgery alone!). They had gloves and masks and had to take turns cutting up their sentence strips, making them a contraction, and patching them up with a band-aid. The band-aid also looks like the apostrophe.
While there was a little distraction with the discovery of blowing up their gloves, they quickly got over it once they realized that those who blew up their gloves got their gloves taken away :) Overall they loved it and it also taught them to work with a team.
